Vegas Golden Knights forward Phil Kessel broke the milestone record set by Keith Yandle in Tuesday’s NHL game against the San Jose Sharks. The team won by 4-2 at SAP Center in San Jose, where the forward played his 990th NHL consecutive game.

He led the team with a 1-0 lead on his sixth shift at 15:51 of the game. He took a shot off Sharks goalie James Reimer while warding off defenceman Matt Benning to get his 400th NHL goal.

Before breaking the record on Tuesday, he tied Yandle’s record the previous night in the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs where he assisted in a 3-1 win. Apart from taking time off due to an off-shoulder surgery, Kessel has not missed any games since October 31, 2009.

Keith Yandle congratulated the forward stating, “To play in even one NHL game is a remarkable achievement. And to play in every game going back 13 years takes unbelievable talent to stay in the line day in and day out.”

Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy stated, “Good for him, he certainly earned it”. “Those young legs were churning on [his goal]. He still skates, still makes plays. Very happy for him.”

“Obviously, it’s a big night for him. You want to remember when you break a record with a win. To be able to score a goal, something he’s done his whole life to get to 400, I think is just great. It’s a great night for him and we’re all happy to be part of it.”

He will be playing his 1000th game against the Arizona Coyotes on November 17. Last week, Jack Eichel said, “When you think about it, it’s really incredible”. “You rarely see a guy play the full 82 games for the whole season. And for him to do it for so many seasons in a row, it’s pretty impressive.”
