Bruce Boudreau’s firing speculations have gone on for weeks, and finally, on Sunday the bomb was dropped. His firing process was so badly handled that even opponents of the game have started commenting on it.
Not only that, but now it seems people outside the hockey world are also coming in support of ‘Gabby’ the now-former Vancouver coach. He was replaced by Rick Tocchet who brought along his own people to fit in and change the organization.
How much he’ll be able to change is now rather a side note, as the whole NHL world is watching each of Boudreau’s steps. Fans have flocked together to shower support to the 68-year-old, as they continuously chanted “Bruce, there it is!” in all the last home games.
Bruce Boudreau speaks up for the first time since his firing
After a long period of silence, Bruce Boudreau has finally spoken up. It was quite evident how he wore his emotions on his sleeves during Saturday’s match against Edmonton Oilers. Furthermore, his favorite idol has spoken up on social media celebrating the man he is and his achievements.
Bruce has time and again shown how greatly he thinks of WWE wrestler Kevin Owens. In the ring, he’s the one Bruce looks up to. Furthermore, all interactions between these two have been a sight to see. Especially the moment when Owens surprised Gabby at the 2022 NHL Draft. Bruce was red with excitement and shock.
In a recent social media post, Kevin commented, “Hey, you know who rules? Bruce Boudreau”. It may be his way of cheering the former coach or just his way of celebrating the person Bruce is. However, he isn’t the only one to do so.
Former NHL player Nate Thompson commented, “I understand the NHL is a business and they don’t owe us anything but at the same time I think Bruce has earned the respect”. While Montreal Canadiens insider Eric Engels said, “I can honestly say that, in my 15 yrs covering the NHL, I have never seen anything like this Bruce Boudreau fiasco.”
“I have no clue how any organization—even one as apparently as dysfunctional as the Canucks—could operate this way. The cruelty of it aside, it’s just so ridiculous.” Bruce Boudreau’s firing wouldn’t have exploded this much had the organization handled the procedure well.
After all that is done, Canucks president Jim Rutherford said he would like to apologize to the former coach if his direct words have hurt him. Finally speaking about his feeling on Monday, Bruce said, “You want me out, get me out…”
“…but I’m not going to quit and I’m not going to ever give up because if you do that, you’re quitting on the players and my whole thing with the team all year was, we never quit”
Addressing the fan support he said, according to Clutch Points, “The fans were great. They’re very, very passionate in Vancouver. If this team could ever get a winner, you’d want to be here because it’s loud”.
