“Loved my time here” – Mark Giordano re-signs two-year, $1.6 million contract with Toronto Maple Leafs

Canadian star ice hockey player Mark Giordano signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. It comes out to have an average annual value of $800,000, starting from the next National Hockey League (NHL) season.

The 38-year-old defenseman, who could have been an unrestricted free agent on July 13, had 35 points (eight goals, 27 assists) in 75 games for the Seattle Kraken and Maple Leafs this season. He also recorded a couple of assists in Toronto’s seven-game 3-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference First Round.

“Everyone knows I’m from Toronto, I love it here, I’ve loved my time here,” Giordano said on May 17, as quoted by NHL.com. “I’ll talk to my agent next week and go from there. I don’t think it’s a secret that I’ve enjoyed my time here.

“I feel pretty good about my game and feel like I’m a guy who can also help young guys along the way. I felt good, keep training hard and hopefully keep going for a few more years.”

The veteran NHL player, who has featured in 16-seasons, has 544 points (151 goals, 393 assists) in 1,024 regular-season games for the Flames, Kraken and Maple Leafs. Apart from this, the Ontario-born Giordano has nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 30 Stanley Cup Playoff games and also won the 2018-19 Norris Trophy voted as the top defenseman.

“We are thrilled that Mark has elected to re-sign with the Maple Leafs,” general manager Kyle Dubas said. “Mark came in at the [trade] deadline and provided a veteran, stabilizing presence to our back end while vastly improving our defensive play. Everything he does is done to help the team win and that includes a tremendous sacrifice in this contract negotiation.”
