‘$30 million vs free-agent’- Mattias Samuelsson gets bailed out by the Buffalo Sabres

Mattias Samuelsson signed a $30 million contract with an average of $4.29 million annual valuation with the Buffalo Sabres this Wednesday wanting to close the negotiations for a while now. He has shown his interest in a long-term collab for a while now and is pleased to finally close them.

The 22-year-old defenseman stated that he was always interested but could not bring it together earlier. He is very valued and exactly the kind that Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams mentioned Sabres wanted in the long run.

Samuelsson is considered in fourth place after the Sabres defensemen, Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power and Henry Jokiharju with 10 out of 42 assists for the season in the previous season. His ice time average stands at 20 minutes along with a skill to move the puck.

“He’s a great teammate, he’s a great hockey player who we believe has the work ethic and character to continue to get better. He plays a style that we don’t have as much as a 6-foot-4, 232-pound defender that’s tough to play against and can also have the skill to move the puck,” says Sabres Kevyn appreciating the Samuelsson game style.

As to why Mattias Samuelsson chose Sabres, the player pretty much values the growth avenue that the team offers. He said, “Personally, I think just being up here (with the Sabres) for however many games it was, the style of play, we play with no hesitation. I think it allows you to develop and just play on instincts rather than thinking so much of systems or details or anything like that.”

While post-season, the shots were mostly called at him becoming a free agent since his three-year tenure for the entry-level contract was signed in May 2020 making this one the last, Mattias Samuelsson has definitely taken a huge jump, trusting his instincts and the Buffalo Sabres.

Kevyn Adams too considered him a valuable addition to the Buffalo Sabres stating, “For us, I look at it more as an investment and you have to make these types of decisions as we build out our roster and obviously we were comfortable doing that”. Looks like Mattias Samuelsson has his work cut out for him.
