“Pretty special” – Matty Beniers states how Kraken is fortunate to get Shane Wright at the 2022 NHL Draft

Shane Wright and Matty Beniers

Seattle Kraken centers Matty Beniers and Shane Wright developed a special bond after skating together for the first time at the development camp. They both also appeared at the MLB game, where Beniers threw the first pitch at the Mariners game. Beniers expressed how excited he is to have Wright on the team. Shane Wright got selected by the Seattle Krakens as the 4th pick of the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft last week.

After skating together on Monday, Beniers stated, “I think we were fortunate enough to get Shane and a lot of other great players”. “You watch [the draft] and you’re like, ‘Wow, that was me a couple of years ago,’ and now you see a bunch of other guys’ dreams come true. So, it’s pretty special.” Beniers made his NHL debut on 12 April in a game against the Calgary Flames where he scored 9 points in 10 games.

Though Shane Wright was considered the top pick in this year’s draft and was also No. 1 according to NHL Central Scouting’s ranking, he fell short at the end and ended up as N0. 4 selection by the Seattle Kraken. He stood 8th in the OHL with 94 points in 32 goals and 62 assists in 63 games, including 51 in his final 32 games.

Wright and Beniers were two of the rest 27 players on the ice when Kraken started their development camp. According to nhl.com, Beniers noted, “Every time you’re on the ice, you get a chance at getting better”. “Obviously, you’re here to meet everyone and build that team chemistry, team culture that we’re trying to build here.”

Beniers and Wright spent the Sunday afternoon along with other prospects in the camp, building a bond during the Seattle Mariners game. Beniers continued to note, “We all kind of just got to know each other a little bit and asked about hometowns”. “You know, where you played growing up, things like that. It wasn’t too much hockey talk.” “Everyone’s training and getting ready for the next season”. “We’re all pretty excited, hoping for a better outcome than last year. That’s the goal, and I think everyone’s pretty dialed into getting that.”
