The reigning Stanley Cup champions Colorado Avalanche is on the brink of elimination following a brutal Game 5 loss against Seattle Kraken. Avs star forward Nathan MacKinnon is fuming over NHL officials as they miss out on a major tripping penalty leading to the game’s turnover point.
The polarizing moment played out as MacKinnon was thrashed onto the boards by Kraken defenceman Will Borgen with 10 minutes remaining in the 2nd period. A visibly upset MacKinnon, slammed his sticks on the side of the wall as Kraken thrived on the missed opportunity.
Furthermore, on-ice officials didn’t call out the tripping play boosting the Kraken’s lead in the 1st-round playoff series. MacKinnon was clearly yelling at the referees as he unintentionally set up the stage for Kraken forward Tye Kartye to fire a shot against Avs goalie Alexander Georgiev.

During the post-game interview, Nathan MacKinnon stated, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. It’s not 1975; I feel like that’s a trip”. But the forward insists on keeping cool rather than being upset as Game 6 will be taking place on Friday.
The now-leading Kraken will head into Game 6 on Friday night at Climate Pledge Arena. Although they’re leading the series 3-2, the team is well aware of the upcoming challenge the Avs will put out.
On Thursday, Kraken defenceman Justin Schultz admitted that they know the fourth game is going to be tough, especially against the reigning champions. But the Kraken are confident that they can pull it off given how the team has been “focusing on the task at hand, not listening to any outside noise.”
The Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Cale Makar will be returning in Game 6 after serving a 1-game penalty. He was called out by officials after slamming Kraken’s leading goal-scorer Jared McCann into the boards. Avs head coach Jared Bednar is ready for challenges as he said, the pressure has always been the heaviest on the champions and it’ll be no different moving forward.
The Avs are ready “to win and we want to get rewarded for the hard work we put in for the season”. Things won’t go down smoothly as the Kraken has been dealing numbers on Avs since the beginning of the 1st-round playoff series. Bednar said that they are not only a good team but also confident in their moves.
Despite the restless pressure, the Avs are no stranger to expectations in the past three or four years, but they have always got their job done, according to Bednar, “I believe in our team to be able to deal with the expectations.“
