It’ll be a grand magical 2023 weekend as Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will be combining forces with Colorado Avalanche alternate captain Nathan Mackinnon. That’s not all, he’ll also be teaming up with Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin

The NHL All-Star break week can be boring at times, but not with competitions and matchups like this. ESPN analyst Kevin Weekes reported that the Pittsburgh captain called for a little help from his good friend Mackinnon for the Skills Competition.

Both Nova Scotia natives will be participating in the new Splash Shot Challenge event and are rumored to be interested in participating in the Pitch n’ Puck event too. The Pitch n’ Puck event is a skill event where players will be testing their skills in both hockey plus golf.

Crosby and Mackinnon are good golf players, maybe they’ll play together this time around. As for the Splash event, NHL describes it as, “will be on the beach at Fort Lauderdale and feature eight players, divided into four teams of two.” Players are required to hit all the targets before attempting to dunk their opponents, the winner being the one to dunk his or her opponents first.”

Another interesting pair to watch out for apart from Sidney Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon is the team up of Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. There’s no need to ramble about the rivalry that goes down between the two teams, but that aside they are good friends.

Fans love to pit both against each other and they too enjoy playing against each, but apart from ice, they are good friends. Ovie and Crosby admitted that they often text and chat. When Ovie crossed Howe’s record the whole media world started hyping him for crossing the Great One.

Crosby openly stated that he supports him chasing Wayne Gretzky down and will celebrate the day when it comes. Though the Skills Competition they’re preparing for won’t be easy at all. Crosby and Ovie will be facing off against Hall of Famer Robert Luongo

On Thursday at NHL All-Star Media Day, Ovechkin noted, “Me and him talked about it and we’ll see what’s going to happen“. “I’m not going to tell everything”. “If it’s going to work, I think it’s going to be pretty cool, but we’ll see.”

Ovechkin was asked what it’ll be like when both of them hangs their skate, “I think he still enjoys playing hockey. I’m still enjoying playing hockey and I’m pretty sure when me and him are going to be retired we’re just going to have a couple beers together and talk about the whole thing that happened in the last 15-16 years”.

“I think it’s great for hockey for previous generations and future generations to see that kind of comparison, that kind of battle between the two of us, two organizations. I think it’s great for the game.”
