Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Tony DeAngelo got suspended by the NHL for 2 games including a $54,054.06 fine, a 5 min major, and a game misconduct for his actions on Tuesday night. The Flyers defenceman speared Lightning’s forward Corey Perry in the groin which resulted in the latter falling on the ice.
It seemed Tony circled around a group of gathered players around the net and struck Perry with his stick. It took a second for the Lightning players to jump at Tony, surrounding him with punches. Moreover, the incident occurred after the whistle, which led the officials to call for a major penalty and game misconduct.
Following a further review of the video clip, the National Hockey League declared that Tony would be in suspense for 2 games, “It is important to note that DeAngelo does not engage with Perry in any prior to spearing him, choosing to strike while Perry is not looking at him”.
“What causes this play to rise to the level of a suspension is the premeditated nature of the foul against an unsuspecting opponent well after the whistle, the area of the body the spear was delivered, and the force of the blow.”
Tony DeAngelo states it’s an accident to spear Corey Perry in the groin during the scuffle
According to the league’s decision, Tony DeAngelo will be missing his road games against Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins. This season Tony played a crucial role in powerplays for the team, but his recent scuffle with Tampa Bay Lightning’s forward Corey Perry will put a stop to his running for a while.
In the 2022-23 season, the Flyers defenceman scored 34 points in 59 goals with 10 goals and 24 assists. In his NHL career, Tony has successfully recorded 191 points with 44 goals and 147 assists in 329 games played.
In this ongoing season, Tony is reported to enjoy a cap hit of $5 million following his 2-year $10 million contract with the Flyers. The NHL announced its ruling on Wednesday following the groin spearing incident on Tuesday. Despite the turmoil, the Lightning bolted win over the Flyers with a 5-2 score.
Tony DeAngelo said about Corey Perry after the incident, “He tried to slash my stick out of my hand seconds beforehand”. “He talks all game. I asked him to fight. He doesn’t want to fight. He’ll tell you he’s asked me to fight for years. I don’t say no.
Tony went on to say that he “wasn’t trying to give him a shot.” The replay of the video looked grimmer than what he supposedly intended. He went for a slash, but the hit to the groin was an accident. Tony further stated that he took, “30 punches on the ground” Before being pulled away by the officials.
This was not the first time, NHL issued a suspension to Tony. In 2017, he was suspended for 3 games after the defenceman was charged with physical abuse towards a referee. He is very well known for his temper and physical attacks, with the recent incident adding another call to the shelf.
