According to New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier, Timo Meier’s addition to the team is a part of the missing puzzle. Hischier and Meier have been teammates while representing Switzerland in international competitions. Meier was the captain of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship and IIHF World Championship in 2021 and 2022.
Given his history with Hischier, Devils coach Lindy Ruff decided on making Meier skate with the team captain and Jack Hughes as linemates. The winger may take on ice as the team dresses up for the Stanley Cup Champions. Meiers coming to Jersey will lead the team to another level, according to Hischier’s belief.
He stated, “I feel like it’s something that’s going to be really good for us with the way he plays”. “He’s not afraid to use his body, can score goals, is a real competitor. It’s all these things that we can use. He’s going to be a big piece of the puzzle to where we want to get to.”

Timo Meier was acquired by the Devils on Sunday in a blockbuster deal. The forward was in his last contract year with the San Jose Sharks and would’ve tasted the free market without the recent trade. Currently, with Carolina Hurricanes sitting in front of the Metropolitan Division, the Devils stand 3 points behind them.
Teams are rushing to grab the playoff spot for the upcoming Stanley run with the Devils being no different. Unfortunately, they have missed playoffs for 4 straight seasons and 9 in of the past 10. Nico Hischier states that Meier’s playoff experience will help the team achieve new levels.
According to Hischier, “He’s a gamer for sure”. “He comes up big in big games and is just an all-around dangerous player. You got to contain a player like that during a game and especially for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.”
“The size he has (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) can help us a lot; he’s been in the playoffs, he has experience there as well. So it’s definitely a useful pickup.” The Devils have been doing great so far in the 2022-23 season, with the addition of Meier and his offensive power, the team will once again strive for the Stanley Cup win.
Jack Hughes also praised Meier’s ability on ice as he said, “I think we were all hearing the rumors, so now that it’s done, we’re excited to have him”. “He brings a lot of skill, brings a lot of size to us too. He’s a 30-goal scorer already so he’ll be a big pickup.”
“Hopefully we have Timo here for a while. He’s a part of our corps now and we’re really happy to have him.” Coach Lindy Ruff said that they always wanted to form a team that can go for the win and strives in the new season. There’s still time to climb up the rankings, and with new trade additions, that dream may just come true.
Prior to the Devils’ game against Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena, Timo Meier may take on the ice. Though he was dealing with an upper-body injury, Meier reported on Sunday that he is day-to-day as of now.
Following the coach’s plan to have Meier in line with Hughes and Hischier, the captain commented, “We’ve set our expectations high…” He further said that they’ll make good teammates and will like to involve him in matches from the get-go.
Hischier further said that “Timo’s just a piece that’s going to help us get there.” All eyes will be on Meier if the forward takes on the ice against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. As of this season, he has made 52 points with 31 goals and 21 assists in 57 games.
