Penguins copy Evgeni Malkin's pre-game routine

Pittsburg Penguins center and alternate captain, Evgeni Malkin had a bizarre way of celebrating his iconic 1,000th National Hockey League appearance. His teammates and his family made sure this day stood out the most, and something that he’ll remember all throughout his life.

Among the many memory archives, Malkin’s 1000th game against the Chicago Blackhawks will surely find a place to stay. Prior to the team’s 5-3 win over the Blackhawks on Sunday night, the Penguins decided to copy Malkin’s ‘unique’ warm-up technique.

Drafted in 2004, Malkin, nicknamed “Geno”, became the 11th player to reach the 1000th milestone in the history of the franchise. The Penguins copying his routine was surely a site to see. His bizarre pre-game warmup consists of sprawling out on his back and stretching from side to side. Every single player paid tribute to the Russian legend through this unique display.

Malkin who is also known for his stoic face during plays, couldn’t help but smile after looking at his teammates. It is said that such a site has never been noted in the history of the sport. Every Penguins player put their back against the ice with their feet up in the air as they twisted and moved altogether.

This whole facade was directed and orchestrated by the one and only captain Sidney Crosby. Forward Brock McGinn said in an interview, “Sid went around the plane yesterday and told everybody that’s what we were doing”. “I think everybody enjoyed it.”

However, that wasn’t all. More surprises were yet to be revealed to Malkin. His son, Nikita joined the center stage and participated in announcing the roster for the game. He didn’t expect to see his son and wife in a far-away game.

Then again, Mario Lemieux noted, “You’re not only one of the greatest players in Penguins history, you’re one of the greatest in the history of NHL – and a huge part of those three Stanley Cup Championships. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the team and the city…and here’s to many more, my friend.”
