Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux’s close ties are often talked about in NHL. The two hockey stars stayed under the same roof for more than four years as Lemieux supported the young hockey phenom with shelter, advice, and a new partner.
During an interview, Crosby revealed how the Lemieux family convinced him to get a puppy within “first couple of weeks there they convinced me to get a dog right away. So I was like…I don’t know if I need a dog right now, I can barely do my own laundry.”
Mario Lemieux and his family were successful in getting Crosby to adopt a puppy named Sam. Within a couple of weeks, Crosby realized he is an excellent player on the ice, but not a good father to Sam when ‘The Next One’ caught Lemieux cleaning after “dog sh**”.

Apparently, Sidney Crosby was returning from training when an awful smell welcomed him at Mario Lemieux’s home. Instantly Crosby knew that it was Sam’s poop that filled the house with a unique aroma. The next thing that happened shocked and embarrassed the hockey phenom for life.
Lemieux, who was known for his cleanliness was found wiping Sam’s poop from the kitchen floor. Even before the Lemieux family took Crosby in, ‘Darryl’ was already a fan of Mario Lemieux. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his idol cleaning after his “dog’s sh**”.
Crosby later noted this incident as one of the best, funniest, and most embarrassing tales in his Lemieux diary. Lemieux is known for his professional years as a hockey legend. His game, way of controlling the puck, and skating outshone many of his era.
According to reports, Lemieux sees Crosby not as a player or someone from his extended family, but as his own son. Even Lemieux’s children consider him a part of the family and look forward to following in his footsteps.
He noted, “He’s great to be around. He’s the same kid he was when he came to live with us four years ago – he’s a joy to be around,”. “My kids love him and he’s a part of our family, really, he’s been with us so long. It’s great to have him around.”
The Pittsburgh Penguins captain lists Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky as his idol and still revers them as iconic players in the sport. During an interview, he told how much he looks up to both of them and even if he crosses their records, their legacy can never be touched by him.
Lemieux and Gretzky both praised Crosby on the other hand. According to Gretzky, Crosby’s joining the Penguins organization saved the team so far. The Penguins trio, Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang are often glorified on the ice despite the team not reaching the Stanley Cup race this year.
