Michigan cuts ties with coach Mel Pearson

University of Michigan’s hockey coach Mel Pearson is dismissed from his duties as the institute announced on Friday. Pearson’s contract with the establishment was already over after last season and he was standing as an at-will employee while waiting for a review of the program. 

The investigation handled in May revealed that he indeed took part in pressuring the athletes to lie about their COVID-19 contact during the 2020-21 season, while also in charge of firing volunteer coach Steve Shields for raising concerns. Athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement released by the school, “This decision has been weighed heavily and for some time”. “We welcomed an independent third-party review into the climate and culture of our program before furthering our assessment in lockstep with campus leadership.”

He continued, “Our student-athletes having a positive and meaningful experience is of paramount importance, and a clear expectation within our department is that all employees and staff are valued and supported. I deeply appreciate and value the many individuals who came forward throughout this review. Today’s announcement reflects the seriousness with what we’ve heard and the values we hold dear at Michigan.”

Mel Pearson has been at it for quite some time, pressuring student-athletes into submission, providing misinformation, firing and accusing staff members, and retaliating against players who question his conduct are among a few examples of his outrageous behavior, as reported by nypost.com

The Wolverines did not take part in the 2021 NCAA Tournament due to pandemic protocols. They were 31-10-1 last season while losing to Denver in Frozen Four. Prior to being the head coach for the Michigan Men’s Hockey Program, he coached at Michigan tech.
