Former NHLer Paul Bissonnette’s jab at the Edmonton Oilers took a heavy toll on the analyst as Wayne Gretzky mercilessly demolished Leafs for their recent playoff game. Bissonnette has been a Toronto supporter this 2023 playoff season. Gretzky on the other hand, stands on the opposite side, supporting Oilers.
Both the NHLers spoke about their respective teams when talking about the game between Carolina Hurricanes vs. Florida Panthers. Gretzky took a subtle dig at Leafs’ on-live air as Bissonnette commented, “You saw some teams that tried to go a little top-heavy…”
Looking back at Gretzky, Bissonnette stated that he doesn’t “want to hurt anyone’s feelings here with Edmonton Oilers, Wayne…but it can hurt you, Wayne”. Gretzky fired back with a witty reply taking notes from the all-time classic chirp asking why was Biz Nasty taking a hit at the Oilers. “You’ve got guys in Toronto on milk cartons”.

The Oilers failed to advance to the final round of the playoffs. Fans stated the team was heavily dependent on captain Connor McDavid and NHL 2nd top scorer Leon Draisaitl throughout the series. On the other hand, the same goes for Leafs whose captain, John Tavares, and one of the top scorers Auston Matthews flopped hard against the Panthers.
Their offense was considered a joke, as ‘The Cats’ easily overpowered them with goals and hits on-ice. Furthermore, fan favorites William Nylander and Mitch Marner could only record 3 points in 5 games.
It can be controversial to state who actually won the argument, as both team’s top players failed to produce results leaving them out of playoff contention. No one player can be blamed considering NHL is a team sport and not an independent one.
Gretzky also spoke about why and how he decided it was time for him to quit the ice and hang up his skates. He said that at some point his opponents started respecting him way too much. They would warn ‘The Great One’ before a hit, yelling, “‘Hey, heads up,’ or ‘Wayne, get out of the way,’ or ‘Here we are.’”
In the game of hockey where hits are common, Gretzky’s opponents started becoming wary of hurting ‘The White Tornado’. By that time, he had already demolished several NHL records, upheld the sport in a new light, and ruled the ice in a Hollywood-esque manner.
Putting himself in place of Gretzky’s opponents, Conan O’Brien said, “I don’t want to be the guy who kills Wayne Gretzky”. In the Rangers vs. Penguins game at Madison Square, Bryan Adams sang the song “O Canada” swapping the last end of the song for “We’re gonna miss you, Wayne Gretzky.”
