New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays join forces on social media to increase alertness about gun violence on Thursday, considering the recent disastrous incidents that took place where many lives were lost. On Thursday instead of covering their Major League game, they decided to collaborate on social awareness looking at the current situations in the country, especially the shootings that took place at Uvalde, Texas, and at the Buffalo supermarket.

In Uvalde, Texas, an 18-year-old boy took up a gun with a semi-automatic rifle and stormed an elementary school in hopes to take shelter from the police, but instead started firing where 19 innocent children and 2 adults lost their lives. It is also said that he used the gun to hurt his grandmother before the elementary school incident took place. On the other side, in Buffalo supermarket, a similar shoot-out case occurred where 10 lives were lost. Such cases were seen in the States earlier in the years too, but these two cases happened just in a few weeks difference and were more horrendous.

Both the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees used their social media accounts to tweet out “facts about gun violence in America” on Thursday night. As noted on usnews.com, the Yankees said in a statement, “In lieu of game coverage and in collaboration with the Tampa Bay Rays, we will be using our channels to offer facts about the impacts of gun violence”.

“The devastating events that have taken place in Uvalde, Buffalo, and countless other communities across our nation are tragedies that are intolerable.”

The Rays stated, “We all deserve to be safe — in schools, grocery stores, places of worship, our neighborhoods, houses, and America”. “The most recent shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde have shaken us to the core.” “This cannot become normal. We cannot become numb. We cannot look the other way. We all know, if nothing changes, nothing changes.”

On Thursday, the MLB team replaced diverted from their usual social media platform activities and replaced them with posts like, “Firearms were the leading cause of death for American children and teens in 2020.” The Rays further posted, “We understand that no single organization can solve this crisis alone”, “but working together, we can make an impact.”

Not only these two sports teams but members like Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr have used their social media platforms to plead for action to combat gun violence. Many MLB teams have supported this idea and taken action in their own way. Everyone is hoping for a new change in society.
