Ex-Boston Bruins legendary defenceman Zdeno Chara recently opened up about the iconic Stanley Cup race in 2011 against the Vancouver Canucks. The 2011 race was one of the best memorable matches played in the National Hockey League. It is one of those matches which you’ll miss even after years.

Needless to say, the 2011 Stanley race sparked a bitter fire between the two teams as they till today carry bad blood between them. Recently, in talks on the Games with Names podcast, Chara opened up about the reason behind their winning spree and what kept them motivated to reach the Cup.

The disclosure was a bit of a shock as Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa bluntly denied any rumors related to what the legendary Bruins player stated. The Bruins outscored their opponent to a 12-1 victory claim though the latter had an advantage during Game 6 at TD Garden where the Canucks scored 3-2.

Zdeno Chara alleged that he and the Bruins players saw the Canucks practicing lifting Lord Stanley even before their next game began. In the podcast, he shared with Julian Edelman and Sam Morril, “After losing two games in Vancouver, we saw players from Vancouver coming on the ice in the Garden…”

“…and they were actually practicing how they would be lifting the Cup and handing off the Cup to each other”.  “And we found out about these things and we were like ‘f–k this, we are not going to allow this to happen.’ It just fueled us.”

Well, there is actually no proof of this fact as the opponent team Bieksa denied all allegations. Though, if the facts are true then it’s no doubt why the Bruins destroyed the Canucks back then. Chara further stated, “I wouldn’t say dirty, they were just like maybe a little bit too, how should I say, maybe cocky is not the right word, but they were having a chip on their shoulders”.

“They had some players that had some reputation of being role players and agitators, and not really backing up the way they played. But they were good players, it was like they did some stuff that really really fueled us.”

The 2011 mood between the Canucks and the Bruins may not happen again especially if it’s unlikely this season, as the Canucks stand at 12-12-13 with 27 points, 6th in the Pacific Division. Whereas, the Bruins are leading the pack with 21-3-1 with 43 points. It’s highly unlikely they’ll meet at Stanley Finals this time around.
