World No. 1 Jannik Sinner recently defended his Australian Open title. The three time Grand Slam champion defeated second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets at the finals.

However the Australian Open 2025 could be the last Major for the Italian this year, as he nears the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sports) hearing of his doping case. Sinner’s hearing is scheduled for April 16-17, and if the decision goes against him, he could be banned for up to two years.

Nick Kyrgios, who is known for his outspoken and sardonic nature, took a jibe at Jannik Sinner while responding to a tweet that mocked the Aussie’s win-less 2025 season in singles. His dig at the Italian came after a popular tennis page named Swish Tennis shared a meme humorously comparing Kyrgios’ win record in 2025, to ‘BYE’s’ performance.

Bye has failed less drug tests than Sinner.

Nick Kyrgios wrote

A BYE refers to a player’s automatic advancement to the next round without playing an opponent. “BYE has won more matches than Nick Kyrgios in 2025,” the tweet read. The Australian, gave a witty response, pointing out that BYE has also failed fewer drug tests than Sinner.

Jannik Sinner tested positive twice for clostebol

Jannik Sinner had tested positive twice for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024. An independent tribunal accepted his explanation that the positive results were due to unintentional contamination.

According to Sinner, the steroid entered his body when his physiotherapist used a spray to treat a cut, and then provided a massage and therapy. However, after the US Open, the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) appealed the independent tribunal’s decision to the CAS, who accepted it.

The controversy saw Sinner fire his physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi and athletic trainer Umberto Ferrara at the end of August 2024. The reaction from the tennis community to his doping case along with Iga Swiatek‘s case have been varied. Nick Kyrgios has always been staunchly critical of both these players, and of the leniency with which their cases have been dealt with.

During his post-match press conference after defeating Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open 2025 finals, Sinner was also asked about his upcoming hearing. The Italian remarked that he was not thinking about the hearing at the moment.
