Nick Kyrgios found Jannik Sinner‘s coach Darren Cahill getting the 2024 Coaching Excellence award by Tennis Australia a ‘joke’. Kyrgios, upon coming across a tweet, urged the authorities to have some ‘class’.

Kyrgios fumed because of the doping controversy around Sinner. The Italian failed two drug tests and avoided a ban upon being declared innocent. Kyrgios, since August (when the report came out) has been slamming Sinner for failing the test. This time when Sinner’s coach Cahill won the award, it again prompted a response from the Australian.

Sinner tested positive for clostebol twice in March and upon being informed of the same, he quickly appealed to an independent tribunal after which he was declared innocent as the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his explanation that clostebol contaminated him because of a spray his ex-physio had been using.

The Indian Wells prize money he won by reaching the semifinals was taken away and Sinner did not face a harsh punishment, unlike several innocent players in the past. Kyrgios, like other critics, wants the ITIA to ban Sinner.

Nick Kyrgios takes another dig at Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner talked at length about his mental state when he learned from the ITIA that he failed the drug test. Apart from ‘sleepless nights’, Sinner was anxious about facing people as he was worried about what they were thinking of him.

It was a tough time. I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I couldn’t vent or get help. All the people who knew me and watched me play understood that there was something wrong with me.

Sinner also said the doping controversy helped him know who his real friends are on the ATP Tour. Nick Kyrgios, when he across this interview, once again made a stinging remark.

Yes. You tested for steroids. Very hard to talk to other people who aren’t.

On the ATP Tour, Kyrgios has faced Sinner once (in the fourth round of the 2022 Miami Open) and lost that match in straight sets. Kyrgios, who hasn’t played a match since the 2023 Stuttgart Open due to multiple injuries, is set to make his return at the Brisbane International next year before the Australian Open where Sinner will enter to defend his title.
