During the ongoing Citi Open, the ATP and WTA players were asked who they think is the ‘smartest player’. When it was Daniil Medvedev and Lorenzo Musetti‘s turn, their answer was Jannik Sinner.
Medvedev continued his hunt for his first title since lifting his career’s first clay-court title at the 2023 Italian Open. But his campaign ended at the hands of Corentin Moutet in the quarterfinals. Musetti suffered an opening-round exit, losing in three sets to Cameron Norrie.
Musetti has played his compatriot twice, losing both matches. Against Medvedev, however, Sinner edges 8-7 in the head-to-head matchups. Sinner had come two sets down to beat the Russian ace in the Australian Open final last year to win his first Grand Slam title.
When Citi Open’s social media shared the clip of the players’ answer, it received a response from Nick Kyrgios. The Aussie laughed at Medvedev and Musetti’s answer as he thinks “Sinner is an OUTRAGEOUS person to say right now“.

Since it was made known by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that Sinner has failed the drug test and was not punished, Kyrgios wasted to opportunity to censure the Italian ace. He joined the critics, accusing the ITIA as well as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of giving him preferential treatment due to his high-profile status.
Kyrgios, however, also lauded the four-time Grand Slam champion during the French Open and Wimbledon because of his performances. Sinner impressed the tennis community after he reached the French Open and Wimbledon finals, winning the latter, right after the three-month ban.
The tennis community started to forget his doping saga, but his coaching decision has once again triggered discussion and debates about perhaps the most controversial chapter of his career. He has re-hired Umberto Ferrara– the fitness trainer who had bought the contaminated spray from Italy and recommended it to Sinner’s former physio Giacomo Naldi because of a cut on his finger. Naldi, during physiotherapy sessions, accidentally contaminated the 23-year-old.
Daniil Medvedev answers if he thinks he can beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Even though Daniil Medvedev has defeated Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz multiple times, he at present is struggling to play to his full potential. Since winning the 2023 Italian Open, the 29-year-old has made it to six finals, losing all, including one to the Spaniard and three to the World No.1.

Against the five-time Grand Slam champion, Medvedev holds a 2-6 head-to-head record. But Medvedev is convinced that if he starts to play his best tennis once again, he has a chance to beat the two young Grand Slam champions, both of whom have lifted the last seven Majors. He said at a press conference in Washington:
First of all, from experience. I know that when I’m playing good, I can beat anyone. Pretty sure anyone. Maybe against Carlos and Jannik, the odds are going to be on their side, but I can still beat them. Against any other player, I beat probably a lot of them many times. Less guys I played one or two times.
Sinner and Alcaraz have skipped the Citi Open and won’t be playing the Canadian Open. They, however, have started their preparation for the North American swing as pictures and videos of their training have surfaced on social media.
Both players will be making their comeback at the Cincinnati Masters, which is scheduled to start on August 7. Sinner will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, he defeated home favorite Frances Tiafoe, while Alcaraz suffered an opening-round exit. In Cincinnati, Sinner and Alcaraz will be aiming to win their sixth and third titles of the season, respectively.
