Nick Kyrgios believes that he will look like a much better player if Novak Djokovic wins the US Open. The Aussie has often praised Djokovic. The two last face each other in the 2022 Wimbledon final, which the Serban won.
Djokovic is in search of his 25th Grand Slam and has failed to win a Major this year. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open. At the French Open, he was forced to withdraw before the quarterfinals after sustaining a knee injury in the fourth round.
Djokovic came very close to winning Wimbledon, losing in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He now enters the US Open as one of the favorites after winning the singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Ahead of the event, Kyrgios, who lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the 2022 Wimbledon final, is hoping the World No. 2 successfully defends his title in New York. He believes that he will look like a much better player when people look back at his career if Djokovic clinches his 25 Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows.
I hope Novak wins the US Open because it makes me look better since I lost my final to Novak. The more he wins, the better I look in the future.Nick Kyrgios said during his ESPN commentary
Djokovic began his US Open title defense with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win against Romanian qualifier Radu Albot.
Novak Djokovic admits he wanted to kickstart his US Open campaign in the right after skipping two Masters tournament
Novak Djokovic stated that he wanted to begin his 2024 US Open campaign in the right way after beating Radu Albot in the first round. The Serbian was playing in his first professional match since the Paris Olympics, after deciding to skip the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open.
Back on the court against Albot, the World No. 2 showed no sign of rust. He needed just two hours and seven minutes to beat the Romanian qualifier in straight sets. After the match, he admitted that he needed a good win to find his groove.
I wanted to kick start the tournament in the right way and I think I did. Some ups and downs which I think is normal, getting the rust off your shoulders coming off a different surface and the Olympic Games. I haven't played on hard courts for six months, so I'm still finding that groove, finding the tempo on the court.Novak Djokovic said (via ATP)
The Serbian will face compatriot Laslo Djere in the second round of the US Open. Djere stunned Germany’s Jan-Lernnard Stuff in a five-set epic thriller in the first round.
