Nick Kyrgios took to social media to offer his verdict on Jannik Sinner’s narrow escape from a doping controversy. The World No. 1 had tested positive for a banned substance twice earlier this year and Kyrgios advocated a two-year ban for this.

Sinner revealed in a post on X that he was cleared of any doping offenses by the International Tennis Integrity Agency. However, he had to give up all the ranking points and prize money he had earned in Indian Wells, where the initial test took place.

Nick Kyrgios said that it was insufficient punishment and called for stricter actions to be taken irrespective of a player’s stature or contribution to the game.

Ridiculous - whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream…. Yeah nice

The Australian is unconvinced about the reasoning behind Sinner’s exemption from harsher punishment.

Jannik Sinner maintains his lead over Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz despite rankings points deduction

Jannik Sinner captured his third hard court Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati on August 19. Not long after that, it was announced that he would be losing the ranking points he received at the Indian Wells Masters, where he had lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals.

However, having skipped Cincinnati last year, he had no points to defend and all the ranking points he gained this year have added to his commanding lead over World No. 2 Novak Djokovic and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz

Almost 600 points will be deducted from Sinner’s board but his huge lead of close to 2000 points will see him remain at the top in the foreseeable future. He is in the running for his first ‘Year-End No. 1’ ranking and remains on track to achieving it.
