Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni defended kicker Jake Elliott amid a rocky game against the Washington Commanders. Elliott missed two field goal attempts as well as missed out on an extra point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Elliott struggled with accuracy early, missing a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 51-yarder in the second. The Eagles went up 12-10 with 12:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Elliott’s woes continued as he missed an extra-point attempt. However, he rebounded to make a 21-yard field goal before halftime and added a 31-yarder in the third quarter. Similarly, he hit two extra points following two Saquon Barkley touchdowns.
Elliott is still far from the eyes of concern. This year, he’s made 14 of 19 attempts, roughly 73%, but is 0 for 4 from beyond 50 yards. Entering the 2024 season, he had converted 26 of 37 overall and an impressive 15 of 17 (88%) from that distance over the previous three seasons.
Amid the uproar of criticisms following the game, Elliott has the backing of his coach for the time being. Sirianni reportedly praised Elliott’s career trajectory and milestones, via a transcript from the team.
Elliott surprisingly skipped off any harsh reactions to the recent poor performances. Nevertheless, the incident has put Elliott on a watch basis, to be monitored in the following weeks.
Legendary Philadelphia Eagles kicker comes in support of Jake Elliott
The former Eagles kicker, David Akers, who spent 12 seasons with the team and is regarded as one of the greatest kickers in franchise and NFL history, has expressed confidence in Elliott. Akers took to X to reveal his thoughts on the player.
Akers admitted that Elliott has played to his maximum capabilities since joining the Eagles. The legendary kicker noted that the last game was very small compared to his history as a kicker.
Great win for the @Eagles last night.I will say @jake_elliott22 has been almost perfection since the day he put on the midnight green. He is a stud and I love watching him perform.Last night is pebble in the road of his successes in the NFL and for the Birds. He has been a stud.

Elliott has been with the Eagles since 2017 when they took him off the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals. Elliott shined in its first year recording the rookie record for the longest field goal in the game’s history. His near-perfection is one of the reasons why the Eagles signed him an extension in the offseason.
