Former Italian player Nicola Pietrangeli has praised his countryman and World No. 1 Jannik Sinner for maintaining a high level throughout 2024. Pietrangeli believes that Sinner’s consistency makes him deserving of the Year-End World No. 1 ranking.
Sinner has become the third player outside the Big 3 to finish as Year-End World No. 1 since 2004. The other two were Andy Murray in 2016 and Carlos Alcaraz in 2022.
Sinner’s consistency has mainly been evident on hard courts, where he has won six of his seven ATP Tour titles. Of those titles, two are Grand Slams (Australian Open and US Open), and three are Masters 1000 events (Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai).
Sinner became World No. 1 in June after Novak Djokovic withdrew from his Roland Garros quarterfinal. Despite limited success on clay and grass courts, the Olympic withdrawal worked in his favor, as he dominated the hard courts in Cincinnati, the US Open, and Shanghai. Sinner’s only loss since August came in the Beijing final to Alcaraz.
Jannik Sinner has been a cut above the rest in 2024
Since Jannik Sinner won his first major title at the Australian Open in January, he has maintained a firm grip on the top spot in the 2024 PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. His dominant season continued with a Tour-leading seventh title at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday (October 13).
With this win, Sinner extended his lead over second-placed Carlos Alcaraz to an unassailable 3,620 points. Sinner’s total of 10,330 points guarantees he will finish the year as ATP Year-End No. 1 for the first time in his career. Alcaraz, with 6,710 points, and third-placed Alexander Zverev, who has 6,215 points, are the only players within 5,000 points of Sinner. Both have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, along with Sinner.
Daniil Medvedev sits in fourth place with 4,820 points. Behind him, just 1,455 points separate US Open finalist Taylor Fritz in fifth from 12th-placed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev, Fritz, and others are in a tight race to secure a spot at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.
Players like Medvedev and Fritz, along with seven-time Nitto ATP Finals champion Novak Djokovic, will aim to boost their qualification chances in the final indoor hard-court tournaments of the season. The Serb, in particular, will focus on the Rolex Paris Masters, where 1,000 points are on offer, and he has already won a record seven times.
