Veteran French tennis player Nicolas Mahut has criticized Nick Kyrgios for going overboard in his comments on Jannik Sinner‘s doping scandal. The controversial Australian star has repeatedly attacked the Italian on social media regarding the issue.

Mahut, best known for his marathon match against John Isner at Wimbledon 14 years ago, stated that Kyrgios has the right to voice his opinion on Sinner. However, he believes the Australian has crossed the line with his remarks.

I don’t like these statements. He has the right to have his opinion on Sinner’s positive test, everyone is free to think what they want. But to poison the situation like that… Sinner has never disrespected anyone, he is world number 1. So it is not necessary.

The situation became difficult for Sinner when his doping scandal came to light in August. The World No. 1 tested positive twice for clostebol in March at Indian Wells. Despite this, he has not faced suspension so far and has continued to play his regular tennis schedule.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is expected to announce its verdict on Sinner in early 2025. Meanwhile, Sinner is allowed to compete at the Australian Open, where he will defend his title.

Jannik Sinner’s schedule revealed before the Australian Open

Jannik Sinner will head straight to the Australian Open in 2025 without playing any official tournaments beforehand. However, the Italian will take part in a couple of exhibition matches before his debut in Melbourne during the Charity Day event. He already knows his schedule for the first round. Sinner will face Alexei Popyrin on January 7th at 6 am CET.

Sinner will also play another exhibition match on January 10th at 9 am CET. His opponent for that match is still unknown. These matches will help him prepare for his title defense at the Australian Open.

The Australian Open in 2024 marked a turning point for Sinner’s dominance on hard courts. He had an impressive run, defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. In the final, Sinner came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev and claim his first Grand Slam title.

Later in the year, Sinner’s success continued at the US Open. He won his second Grand Slam there, solidifying his status as one of the best players in the world.
