Adrian Newey’s departure from Red Bull in May shocked the F1 paddock, sparking rumors of interest from several teams. Ferrari and Aston Martin were considered top contenders for the renowned aerodynamics expert.
However, last week, Aston Martin officially announced Newey as their new Managing Technical Partner. The Briton will oversee the Silverstone-based outfit from 2025, leading the team in their pursuit of victory. Former Ferrari driver Nigel Mansell believes it was a missed opportunity for the Italian team.
Nigel Mansell said that when he got to know Ferrari failed to offer Adrian Newey‘s expected salary, he thought it was a mistake. Mansell believed that the Italian team’s decision to avoid the high wage was short-sighted. The 71-year-old reckoned that by not investing in Newey, they missed a valuable opportunity to be at the top again.
As soon as I heard that Ferrari were baulking at possibly the wage bill that Adrian wanted. I think that was short sighted of them.Nigel Mansell told Crash.net
Mansell opined that any team that hires Newey is almost guaranteed to have a successful few years. He said that Newey’s expertise could have provided a strong advantage to Ferrari and led to great results.
Ferrari, I love them. I love them. I really do, but they lost an opportunity because whoever gets Adrian Newey is almost assured of having a fantastic few years.Nigel Mansell added
Nigel Mansell claims Adrian Newey would find new energy and direction after joining Aston Martin
Mansell observed that Newey might not have been completely satisfied with his work at Red Bull in recent years. Despite his achievements at Red Bull, Mansell believed that moving to Aston Martin and working in the UK would refresh Newey.
I don't think Adrian was totally happy in the last few years with Red Bull and what a fantastic job he's done and I think now being in the UK, being with Aston Martin, I think Adrian will find a little bit more energy and a bit more direction.Nigel Mansell expressed
A change in scenery might help Newey regain his enthusiasm and focus, leading to even greater success in his new role. Fans are hopeful that his arrival will bring a transformative boost to Aston Martin.
