Strahinja, the elder brother of Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, has been indicted for assault after attacking a fan at an NBA game last season. Investigations have been ongoing over the incident which happened earlier this year, during the Nuggets’ 101-99 win against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of their playoff series.
Per Shelly Bradbury of The Denver Post, Strahinja Jokic appeared in court on Wednesday, where he was charged with third-degree assault. The latest charge against the Serbian came from an altercation at Ball Arena back in April. At that playoff game, Strahinja and Nemanja Jokić, the third Jokić brother, were seen confronting two men in the stands. It’s unclear what led to the confrontation, but Strahinja then threw a punch that hit the fan in the head. Shortly thereafter, the NBA confirmed to The Athletic at the time that it had started investigating the incident.
Nonetheless, it appears that the investigation has been concluded and the brother of the Denver Nuggets player is now in court to face trial over his actions.
On Wednesday, a Denver County Court judge put a protection order in place that requires Strahinja Jokic to stay away from the alleged victim in the case. He also ordered Strahinja Jokic to complete fingerprinting and return to court in October to enter a plea in the case. The update from The Denver Post read
The video of the punch quickly circulated widely online, leading to the legal complications that Strahinja now faces. Despite the court issuing an order that mandates him to stay far from the victim, his troubles are far from over as the trial continues in October.
Nikola Jokic revealed childhood story of Strahinja ‘throwing knives’ around his head
Nikola Jokic once raised eyebrows when he recounted his unusual experience with older brother Strahinja, back in Serbia as a kid. The Nuggets’ big man is widely regarded as one of the greatest centers of all time. However, it seems his early childhood was far from ideal.
While speaking in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Jokic recalled how Strahinja once threw knives over his head as punishment for refusing to climb a tree.
He once held down my arms and threw knives all around my head. That was a little crazy.Nikola Jokic said
Despite having such an unsettling childhood experience, Jokic apparently didn’t take it to heart and instead chose to let love lead. That persevering mindset eventually saw him make his mark on the NBA, while also leading Serbia to a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics.
