Nikola Jokic led Serbia to a stunning comeback victory over Australia, erasing a 24-point deficit to win 95-90 in overtime. Patty Mills’ 26 points, including scoring 14 points in a row, fueled Australia’s early lead, but Serbia’s supporting cast helped Jokic secure the win.

Australia’s momentum faltered in the second half, allowing Serbia to chip away at the deficit. Brooklyn Nets power forward Bogdan Bogdanovic’s 17 points and Jokic’s 21 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists propelled Serbia to victory. Serbia outscored Australia 25-11 in the third quarter to take back control, but new Chicago Bulls signing Josh Giddey ensured Australia didn’t go away quietly.

Mills sent the contest to overtime with a rainbow jumper over Nikola Jokic, but Serbia dominated the extra period, scoring the final eight points. The Joker produced a key block and connected with a hook shot, making a pair of free throws to put Serbia ahead for good and seal the tie in their favour.

The win sets up a potential semi-final showdown with the United States, who Serbia lost to in their tournament opener. Australia’s heartbreaking loss was marked by Mills’ and Giddey’s impressive performances but ultimately fell short against Serbia’s determination and resilience.

However, they would need to up their game in the next round as they are billed to face either of Brazil or the perennial Olympic champions, the USA. And as the USA are clear favorites in their quaterfinals tie, Jokic and co would have to be on their best and pray for their MVP to be in the form of his life and the last game they played against LeBron James and player of the night Bam Adebayo.
