Novak Djokovic will compete at the Paris Olympics this summer, aiming to win the men’s singles gold medal that has eluded him since 2008. However, his participation in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics was mired in controversy when he failed to play the mixed doubles third-place match with his partner, Nina Stojanovic.
The 37-year-old had participated in the doubles at the Olympics but had never participated in mixed doubles. Tokyo 2021 Olympics was Nole’s first experience playing in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. His doubles match ended in the opening round, but his mixed doubles partnership with Nina Stojanovic and singles progressed to the semi-finals.
Nonetheless, Djokovic disappointingly lost his singles bronze medal match to Pablo Carreno Busta and decided to withdraw from playing the same match in the mixed doubles with Stojanovic stating fatigue as the reason. His decision was questioned by many in the tennis fraternity, but on the other hand, Djokovic fans bashed her for the cause of the 24-time Grand Slam winner’s loss.
Almost three years after the incident, Stojanovic opened up in an appearance on the Reketiranje podcast. She explained the hate messages she received from many fans blaming her for Djokovic not winning any medal at the Olympics.
I was very pleasantly surprised after participating in how many positive messages I received from the audience. A message in the sense of ‘Nina, you are to blame for Novak’s failure, you tired him out’, I read various things afterwards, nonsense really. It was much harder for me, in a way I preferred it because, for the first time, I felt that people were with me for the first time because of tennis. They’re not of any use or, I can’t explain it.Nina Stojanovic said
Djokovic failed to win any medal in 2012 and 2016, exiting in the first round in London and losing in the third-place match in Rio, respectively.
Novak Djokovic training in Wimbledon, despite no official statement on his participation
Novak Djokovic is in Wimbledon ahead of the grass court major tournament. Despite no official report about his participation in the tournament, he is in tournament training after three weeks of undergoing surgery. The 37-year-old tore his midal meniscus in the fourth round of the French Open.
He shared an update on his recovery process a few days ago and followed it up with another video. This time around he was seen running on grass. If he does participate at Wimbledon, he will enter the tournament as No.2 after Carlos Alcaraz failed to defend his Queen’s Club Championship points.
Djokovic is yet to win a title this season after a poor start to the year. At Wimbledon, he has won the tournament seven times and will be hoping to add one to the tally and equal Roger Federer.
