‘No. 1 on my list…is Colby Covington’ – Gilbert Burns names a list of fighters he would like to take on
Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington
The battle of the sparring partners at UFC 258, ended in a defeat for Gilbert Burns. The Brazilian welterweight was beaten by his former teammate Kamaru Usman, via knockout in the third round. A crestfallen Burns was left in tears, after his defeat, but he has vowed to bounce back strongly. Right now in his mind are Colby Covington, Michael Chiesa and Stephen Thompson; in that order.
Speaking in an interview with MMA Fighting, Gilbert Burns expressed his desire to take on number 1 ranked welterweight Colby Covington, before going on to add that he would take on either Michael Chiesa or Wonderboy Thompson, depending on whoever was available; in case the Covington fight doesn’t come to fruition.
‘If he’s not available, then the next guy available‘
Gilbert Burns was quoted as saying, “No. 1 on my list until that fight doesn’t happen is Colby Covington. He’s the No. 1 guy on my list. By the ranks, it’s got to be [Stephen] ‘Wonderboy’ [Thompson] No. 2 and Michael Chiesa. Those three guys I’m looking forward to fight. I don’t care the order. If they say ‘Gilbert, who do you want?’ It would be Colby, but if he’s not available, then ‘Wonderboy.’ If he’s not available, then Michael Chiesa. If he’s not available, then the next guy available”.
Burns also didn’t write off the option to take on Kamaru Usman in a rematch. Speaking of which he said, “I will do four [wins] if I have to – I never had an easy path. I felt that pain before in jiu-jitsu. I’m a hard worker. I’m going to work hard to get that rematch with Kamaru Usman. Whatever it takes.”
‘Durinho‘, has spoken! He clearly isn’t giving up. Do you think he can make a strong comeback and shake-up the welterweight division?
