Tokyo 2020

Tokyo Paralympics 2020 is set to commence on 24th August 2021 and ends on 8th September. The quadrennial event in Japan is expected to witness over 4,400 Paralympic athletes participating in 540 sporting events. India will be sending largest ever Paralympic contingent of 54 athletes to participate in 22 sports.

The Tokyo Paralympics 2021 was postponed by a year due to COVID-19 pandemic. This time event will take place behind closed doors. The decision was taken by Tokyo organizers in a joint statement with International Paralympic Committee on Monday, stating that “More stringent measures will be taken for competitions to be held in these prefectures, including no spectators.” The similar restriction was imposed during the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

However, the school students under special programme will be allowed to witness the quadrennial event in Japan. The organizers of the event have highlighted in the joint statement that the students would only allow to watch the Tokyo Paralympics live with safety measures.

Afghanistan Paralympics team is set to miss the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 after the country was seized by Taliban on Sunday. Most of the participating Paralympic athletes are trapped in Kabul. The situation in Afghanistan worsened after Taliban recaptured the country after two decades.

The news of non-participation Afghanistan team at the Tokyo Paralympics came in after the International Paralympic Committee made a statement. IPC spokesperson Craig Spence stated that “Regrettably, NPC (National Paralympic Committee) Afghanistan will no longer participate in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games”.

Afghanistan was supposed to send two athletes to compete at the quadrennial event in Japan. One of them is Zakia Khudadadi, who would have been first Afghani female athlete to participate at the Paralympics. For the first time since 2000, Afghanistan will not be participating at the Paralympics.

Recently, Afghanistan participated at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The country had fielded 5 athletes in swimming, shooting, athletics and taekwondo, but they didn’t win any medals. If the Taliban fosters their power in Afghanistan, then the country’s participation at the 2022 Asian Games and 2024 Paris Olympics will be doubtful.
