Noah Lyles and Anthony Edwards

United States sprinter Noah Lyles has always been vocal about any issues bothering him regarding any topic whatsoever. Notably, this month, Lyles won gold in the men’s 100m sprint and bronze in the 200m race (despite battling COVID) at the Paris Olympics. Despite this, Adidas offered NBA star Anthony Edwards a special edition shoe before Lyles, which upset him.

According to Sean Gregory‘s TIME story on Lyles, it originates from Adidas inviting Lyles to Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards’ shoe release event. The invitation came during contract extension negotiations between Lyles and Adidas. In addition, the company interpreted this as “throwing Lyles a bone” to demonstrate the significance of retaining him. Nevertheless, Lyles criticized the move.

You want to do what? You want to invite me to [an event for] a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport that you don’t even care about? And you’re giving him a shoe?”

Noah Lyles is currently the ‘fastest man alive’ after his Paris Olympics heroics. A signature shoe deal is not a far-fetched idea for the Olympic gold medalist. Nevertheless, Adidas prioritizing NBA stardom over athletics stardom may have rubbed Lyles the wrong way.

It’s important to note that Lyles cleared the air as he paid his respects to Edwards by calling him an “amazing athlete.” Reiterating that his issue was with Adidas and not Edwards. On the other hand, Lyles still wants a trademark shoe shortly, and his requirements will undoubtedly increase after winning gold in the 100m sprint in Paris.

Adidas “gifted” Anthony Edwards Gold AE1 shoes after securing Gold medal with Team USA

Team USA star Anthony Edwards has garnered much attention lately for many reasons surrounding him. Firstly, Edwards won the Gold medal with the Team USA at the Paris Olympics. Secondly, the sports brand Adidas “gifted” Edwards with a special edition of “Gold AE1s” shoes following the finals against Team France.

In addition, this one-of-a-kind sneaker represents the essence of success and excellence. Also, it was designed specifically for Edwards, one of basketball’s emerging stars. The Adidas AE 1 Low PE “Gold Medal” boasts a sumptuous design that flawlessly combines style and symbolism. It’s important to note that Edwards has yet to win an NBA title in his career.

Despite not winning an NBA title, Edwards remains one of the faces of Adidas as a professional basketball player. Not only that, Edwards’ popularity in the nation is widespread, with some fans claiming that he has traits similar to those of NBA legend Michael Jordan. Now, it remains to be seen whether or not Edwards lives up to the hype in the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
