Notre Dame set to get massive $20 million for reaching national championship! Here’s why
Since Notre Dame plays as an independent institute in the FBS Division, the team keeps all of its prize money earned, unlike those associated with a conference.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have earned their ticket to the National Championship round and, with it, the right to change their name to the Notre Dame Loaded Irish! The team has pocketed an estimated $20 million in the college football playoffs alone and this is thanks to its independent status.
The team is not part of any conference, such as the Pac-12, Big 10, or SEC. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish played this season as an independent institution and while that cost the team its chance to get one of four first-round byes that are awarded to conference champions, it saved them the burden of having to split their winnings with a conference.
The current monetary award is structured as follows; For every team that makes the college football playoffs, a conference receives $4 million. A total of 12 schools are chosen to be part of the playoffs. Subsequently, for every team that makes it to the quarterfinal round, the conference receives $4 million per school.
The sum awarded increases to $6 million for the teams that go on to the semifinal and the national championship.
Notre Dame’s football program will have a big budget to recruit the top players for the next two seasons
While this may seem to be quite the sum irrespective of whether an institute is a part of a conference or independent, after the amount gets divided, an institute ends up with under $300,000 of the original amount. That is a lot of prize money going to teams who did not fare well throughout the season.

Take the example of the Indiana Hoosiers, for instance. As per Sportico, the team kept just $222,000 of the $4 million it earned for the Big Ten Conference by qualifying for the playoffs. The method of dividing the prize money varies from conference to conference.
In the Big Ten, the money is split evenly amongst 18 schools; the SEC follows the pattern decided by its Executive Committee and favors the playoff teams over those that did not qualify.
Suddenly it is looking a lot better to play as an independent team, is it not? In reality, the team would have netted an additional $3 million per round, but that amount is given to teams to cover their expenses.
The Fighting Irish have been criticized for its reluctance to join a football conference and once the new 12-team system kicked in this year, the program was criticized for missing out on the special privilege that schools get upon winning their conference championships. The highest that Notre Dame can be ranked every year is the 5th seed because of its independent affiliation.
The team, true to its name, fought their way and won. With just one more game to cap off a remarkable season, the institute’s management and accounting department have won irrespective of the outcome. The good thing for Marcus Freeman and his staff is their successful run this year has made their recruiting process a lot easier.
In the NIL times, kids do not want to step into a place that cannot satisfy them monetarily and with the sum that the team has netted so far, they should be good in that sphere for another two years.
