Djokovic’s presence at the event helped raise publicity as he chose to play for the exhibition event instead of representing Team Europe at the Laver Cup. The 37-year-old arrived in Bulgaria after representing Serbia in the Davis Cup and won both singles and doubles matches against Greece.
Novak Djokovic explains why he chose to play the exhibition event with Grigor Dimitrov
Back in 2020, amidst the pandemic, Novak Djokovic organized the Adria Tour exhibition in Belgrade, Serbia, and Zadar, Croatia, and Grigor Dimitrov was one of the few players who accepted the invitation. However, as he was later tested positive for the virus in Croatia, the final in the country was canceled. Ahead of the exhibition match in Sofia, Djokovic explained why he decided to play in the event.
With Grigor, he came to Serbia to play in the Adria Tour exhibition a few years ago. And then we agreed that I’m going to play with him in Bulgaria when the time arrives, and it’s suitable for both of us. So, now is the time, and I look forward to it. I never played in Bulgaria, and we are obviously culturally very similar nations and people. So, that’s going to be fun.Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has met Dimitrov 13 times and leads their head-to-head meetings 12-1. The lone win for Dimitrov came in their third encounter at the 2013 Madrid Open.
On the ATP Tour, Djokovic’s last match was at the US Open, where he reached the third round. Dimitrov, on the other hand, reached the quarterfinals. While the 33-year-old Bulgarian won the Brisbane International, Djokovic so far is trophyless on the ATP Tour with the Olympic gold medal being the only title he won this year.
