The Shanghai Masters released a video on its social media to reveal affectionate Chinese nicknames of the top players. All the players featured in the video were confused at first but laughed out loud as they read the reasons behind such hilarious nicknames.

Grigor Dimitrov tried to talk with a Chinese accent before revealing that his nickname is ‘My Lady.’ He was given that name because of his fashion and elegance and he broke into laughter after knowing this reason.

Alexander Zverev seemed a bit confused when he read his nickname, ‘Zi Wei’. He later got to know it was the name of a Chinese TV series character and his surname was pronounced the same.

Daniil Medvedev suppressed a laugh when he read aloud his nickname: ‘Long Arm Monkey’. Casper Ruud, on the other hand, was a ‘Headmaster’s Good Student’ because he trained at Rafael Nadal‘s academy.

Andrey Rublev was ‘Golden Monkey’ because of his “blonde hair and lovely good looks“, and Medvedev said he would be calling his compatriot Golden Monkey from now on. Frances Tiafoe‘s nickname was ‘Big Fortune’ or ‘Blessing’, while Jannik Sinner had no idea why he was ‘Milk Roll Cake’. Well, in China there’s a famous cake brand called ‘Yannick’. Novak Djokovic looked befuddled at first, but as he got to know the meaning, he was grateful for the nickname.

My nickname in Chinese is ‘Chicken’. Is it my nickname? My nickname means chicken? Because in Chinese they use hot, in-form chicken, as a metaphor to say someone is a new sensation. And it has been used since the start of my career. Okay, now it makes sense. Thank you.

Jannik Sinner explains if his hiring of Novak Djokovic’s former coaches is due to his similarities to the Serb

Amidst the doping controversy, Jannik Sinner stopped working with Giacomo Naldi and Umberto Ferrara, his ex-physio and ex-fitness coach. Sinner then hired Novak Djokovic’s ex-physio Ulises Badio and his ex-fitness coach Marco Panichi. The Italian was asked whether the physical similarities to Djokovic were the reason why he started working with the Serb’s former team members.

We have some similarities, me and [Novak Djokovic], but in the end, we are still different, so, you know, we have to try to adapt to our, you know, whatever is best for me, and try to understand.

Djokovic’s next match at Shanghai Masters is against Flavio Cobolli in the third round, while Sinner has already reached the fourth round. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is playing in Shanghai for the first time since 2019
