A lot of things happened during Novak Djokovic‘s Australian Open quarterfinal match against Lorenzo Musetti, held on Wednesday (January 28th). During the first set, the Serb confronted the chair umpire after being given the time violation warning while he was searching for his cap.
He lost the first two sets and took a medical timeout, which raised concerns of a possible injury as Djokovic had serious blisters on his foot. When he broke Musetti in the third set, the latter took a medical timeout to receive treatment on his right upper leg.
The injury eventually forced him to retire mid-match, and this improved Djokovic’s head-to-head record over him to 10-1. During the match, the 24-time Grand Slam champion also displayed true sportsmanship.
In the second set, while Djokovic was trailing 3-5, 30-15, he came forward to the net to finish a point, but the ball went wide, and the umpire awarded Djokovic the point. Djokovic did not waste time in admitting that his racket had touched the ball before it went outside of the court, conceding the point to the fifth seed.

Djokovic, who is chasing his record-extending 11th Australian Open title, last lifted a Major at the 2023 US Open. He has yet to win a Big Title since clinching his career’s first Olympic gold medal in Paris in 2024 against Carlos Alcaraz.
Lorenzo Musetti says retiring mid-match after winning two sets against Novak Djokovic is painful
Lorenzo Musetti was aiming to reach his overall third Grand Slam semifinal and his first one at Melbourne Park. Although this was perhaps his best performance against Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam event, he did not foresee the injury ruining his campaign.

I felt it at the beginning of the second set. I felt there was something strange in my right leg. I continued to play because I was playing really, really well. But I was feeling that the pain was increasing, and the problem wasn’t going away. When I started to play again [after the medical time out], I felt even more… the level of the pain was getting higher and higher. Not much to say about it.
Lorenzo Musetti said at the press conference
Before this year, Musetti had never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in the Major Down Under, with his best performance being a third-round appearance last year (lost to Ben Shelton).
I never imagined the feeling of leading 2 sets to 0 against Novak, playing like that, and having the lead of the match like that, and be forced to retire. It’s something that, of course, I would never imagine. It’s really painful.
Lorenzo Musetti added
Before arriving in Melbourne, Musetti lost to Alexander Bublik in the Hong Kong Open final, losing his seventh consecutive final. He is chasing his career’s third title and is yet to taste victory since lifting the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup.
Novak Djokovic sets up blockbuster semifinal clash with Jannik Sinner
To reach his first Grand Slam final since the 2024 Wimbledon, Djokovic has perhaps the toughest challenge in front of him in the form of World No.2 Jannik Sinner. The Italian registered a convincing straight-set win over Shelton to inch closer to joining Djokovic in the record books.

If Sinner wins the tournament, he will become only the second man, after the 38-year-old, to win three consecutive titles in the first Major of the season. Sinner edges Nole 6-4 in the head-to-head matchups, winning their last five meetings, including in the semifinals of the 2024 Australian Open, 2025 French Open, and Wimbledon the same year. In the previous two Australian Open finals, Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev (2024) and Alexander Zverev (2025).
