Seventh seed Novak Djokovic secured a place in his 50th Grand Slam semifinal after completing a comeback win over Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. It was a match full of physical issues for both players, but the Serb gained the upper hand eventually thanks to his experience.
Djokovic started the match with a break of serve right away but found himself down a set. He also took a medical timeout nine games into the match while Alcaraz was trying to close out the first set.
However, after the medical timeout, Djokovic started to move better and neutralize Alcaraz’s power shots. He broke in the tenth game of the second set to equalize the match at 1 set all.
After taking the third set, Djokovic then secured a dream start to the fourth set, breaking Alcaraz right away. The Serb took that momentum to the finish line and secured the win. The victory improves Djokovic’s head-to-head record to 5-3 against the Spaniard.
Novak Djokovic two wins away from a 25th Grand Slam title
Novak Djokovic is now two match wins away from securing a 25th Grand Slam title. This title will not only give him 100 ATP singles titles, but also move him ahead of Margaret Court in the overall Grand Slam tally.
The Serb will next play German player Alexander Zverev. The second seed defeated Tommy Paul in four sets, 7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, to secure a place in his third Australian Open semifinal.
Djokovic also reached the semifinals last year at the Australian Open, but lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in four sets. The Serb is projected to play the Italian once again in the final, should both players reach it.
Sinner, meanwhile, is playing Alex de Minaur in the Australian Open quarterfinals. The duo recently played in the Davis Cup, where the top seed won in straight sets.
