Novak Djokovic, ahead of his face-off with Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final, has shared an important injury update. The Serbian who seemed to have been facing some problems with his left knee, has revealed that there is nothing to worry about and it’s “good news”.
During his quarterfinal clash against Jakub Mensik, Djokovic was seen trying to stretch out his muscle on the left knee. The 37-year-old has already been troubled by his right knee. He suffered a meniscus tear during Roland Garros and had to undergo surgery.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion did recover quickly and went on to play the Wimbledon final and win the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics but the knee brace has stayed. And now, Djokovic struggling with his left knee sent signs of worry. However, the Serbian has confirmed that there is nothing to worry about.
A day before, the Serbian had hinted that it might be just cramping. Djokovic came back from behind against Mensik to win the match (4)6-7, 6-1, 6-4. On Saturday, he looked even better, winning 6-4, 7-6(6) against Taylor Fritz.
Novak Djokovic is not the favorite in Shanghai Masters final
Getting ready to face the World No.1 Jannik Sinner for his 100th tour-level title, Novak Djokovic does not consider himself the favorite to win the final in Shanghai. Considering Sinner’s form this season, Djokovic admitted that the Italian ace is the player to beat on the hard court.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, despite his phenomenal record in Shanghai (where he has won four titles), admitted that he would need to play his best tennis if he were to beat Sinner.
The World No.1 boasts a 64-6 win-loss record in the 2024 season, and has made it to the quarterfinal or better in every tournament he has played this year. Also, the Italian ace has lost only one final (to Carlos Alcaraz at the China Open).
On top of that, Sinner has managed to defeat Djokovic three times out of the last four matches they have played against each other. The 2024 US Open champion beat Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 when they last played against each other, in the Australian Open semifinal.
