Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic stayed away from the court for more than three weeks as he celebrated his gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He did not play in any tournament after the Summer Games. The 37-year-old is set to return to action at the 2024 US Open, where he will be defending his crown.

While Djokovic and his fans look forward to seeing the Serbian decimate his opponents on one of his favorite surfaces, injury threat looms for the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic seemingly had problems during his practice session with Holger Rune on Friday.

According to TV2’s Nicolai Dvinge, Djokovic canceled his practice session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium after practicing with Rune for an hour on a smaller court before that. Nole’s team informed Rune that “Djokovic would have to receive treatment to see if he could continue his training.”

Rune was left hanging for over 30 minutes in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Dane, however, used this time to interact with the fans and shoot some tennis balls into the stands. He then left to practice on a smaller court with a different training partner.

Novak Djokovic’s hunt for the record 25th Grand Slam title becomes more difficult

After scripting history in Paris by clinching his first-ever Olympic gold medal, Novak Djokovic is now focused on winning a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. The Serbian is already the men’s player with the most Major titles. He, however, is tied with Margaret Court and thus, would hope to become the tennis player with most Grand Slam titles.

However, the job is easier said than done for Djokovic. Nole has not played on a hard court since the Indian Wells Open, where he suffered a shocking defeat to Luca Nardi in the third round. Although the World No. 2 did exceedingly well at Wimbledon and then at the Paris Olympics, Djokovic faces a big threat from the other two top players- Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner beat him in the semifinal at the 2024 Australian Open while Alcaraz got the best out of him in the Wimbledon final. Additionally, Djokovic’s season has been marred with injuries and this new problem ahead of his title defense in New York raises concerns.
