For the past few years, some young players have been heavily praised over their counterparts due to their capability of solving complex tactical situations during matches. Former World No.1 Novak Djokovic has termed that concept “tennis IQ” and has explained what it ultimately comes down to on the court.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are regarded as the two best players on tour currently. Before dominating the tour, the Big 3, which includes Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic had similar dominance in the men’s circuit, but their rivalry was more fierce as they battled hard for every title.
However, what made Djokovic stand tall against Federer and Nadal on the court as their rivalry progressed was his ability to read games and to find players’ weaknesses. He didn’t have the best of serves but he paid attention to crucial moments on the court that most time swung the momentum in his favor.
Alcaraz has also shown that kind of knowledge of the game. Several players on tour have always stressed that it was easier to play Sinner than Alcaraz, due to their different styles of play. Alcaraz is less predictable on the court and can switch tactics in the middle of a set to get the needed results even when he’s not playing at his best.
During Djokovic’s press conference at the Indian Wells Open, following his third-round win over Miomir Kecmanović, he addressed the concept of tennis IQ. The Serbian legend emphasized that the development of tactical intelligence does not begin during matches but through daily preparation and long-term development in areas of the sport:
A simple way to put it, it is finding a way. Finding a solution. I think tennis IQ can be described in different ways. I value the adaptability a lot. To have your game so complete. The tennis IQ that you see on the court in matches. In my case, it is what you do before you get to the official match. How diligently you approach your everyday life. Does it revolve around tennis? Do you nurture the mindset of trying to improve and not only rely on your strengths but improve your weaknesses because everyone does it.
The Indian Wells is Djokovic’s first tournament since reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne. The 38-year-old has won two matches at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament and will face Jack Draper in the fourth round. Draper just returned last month to tour after eight months on the sidelines.
Novak Djokovic says women’s tennis is the leading global example of success
For the past two years, the women’s circuit has witnessed different winners in Grand Slam tournaments. The last time a player won two Slams in a season was in 2024, when Aryna Sabalenka won the Australian Open and the US Open. The rivalry between top players in the women’s circuit has made it hard to predict who will be the champion in a major tournament.

Last year, Madison Keys won the Australian Open, followed by Coco Gauff’s victory at the French Open, and then Iga Swiatek claimed her first grass-court title at Wimbledon. Sabalenka rounds the season up by winning the US Open. During the aforementioned press conference, Novak Djokovic described women’s tennis as the leading global example of success in women’s professional sport:
Women’s tennis has been by far the most successful global women’s sport and also the most paid. It’s great to see that. I’m happy for that and proud of that. I think it’s in a good place.
At this year’s Australian Open, Elena Rybakina became the first Kazakh player to win the championship in Melbourne. She had lost to Aryna Sabalenka at the same tournament in 2023 in the final, she earned her revenge at this year’s edition. She’s into the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open after beating Marta Kostyuk in straight sets.
