Novak Djokovic is the big favourite, I can’t see him failing to win the US Open 2021, says Marion Bartoli

World No.1 Novak Djokovic might have lost the opportunity to win a medal for his country at the recently concluded Tokyo Games. However, the Serb is still within a realistic shot to create history at the upcoming US Open.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion has already won the first three Majors of the year and if he can triumph in New York, Djokovic will achieve a rare feat of winning the Calendar Slam for 2021.
Speaking about his chances at the US Open, former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and renowned journalist, Carole Bouchard joined the latest episode of Match Points.
Bouchard, former reporter for the newspaper L’Equipe believes that fatigue will not be a factor for the World No. 1 in New York.
“If he’s not injured, he has a month to re-mobilize. I think it’s more mentally. Did he put too many emotions into winning Roland Garros, Wimbledon and, not failing, but not getting a medal in Tokyo? I think the question is more mental. Did he put in too much effort? But what I do know is that every time Djokovic played to make history, he did,” he said.
Meanwhile, Frenchwoman Bartoli opined that Djokovic has had decent time to recover physically and mentally, which will enable him to create history at the final Slam of the year.
“I would not understand if we do not place him as a big favourite. For me, he is the big favourite. It’s a little easier. He has a day off between each match, he has time to think about each victory, he has time to rest before the next game. I think the Grand Slams are definitely playing in favour of Novak Djokovic. He will try to win a 21st Grand Slam title and be the first to reach this level,” he further added.
Djokovic will find motivation in New York
“I think his motivation will be at its peak and he has the game to win on hard, he has proven it time and time again. To be honest, I can’t see him failing to win the US Open.,” Bartoli added.
The 34-year-old has already won the US Open three times and will enter the tournament as the top seed. If Djokovic wins the title in New York, he will become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the Calendar Slam in the Open Era.
