Novak Djokovic etched his name in record books once again when he wore the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in the final to take home the coveted medal for the first time in his career.
The 37-year-old then received a hero’s welcome in Serbia. In a video, which has since gone viral on social media, Djokovic could be seen flaunting the medal in front of ecstatic fans. His proud parents, father Srdjan Djokovic and mother Dijana Djokovic, also joined the crowd as they cheered for the tennis legend as well as other Serbian Olympians.

Before Paris, Djokovic was never able to reach the final of the Olympics. On his debut at the 2008 Beijing Games, he claimed the bronze. In subsequent editions in London, Rio, and Tokyo, he went home without a medal.
The gold medal he won this month in Paris was also the Serb’s first title this season. He reached only one other final this year when he finished as the runner-up to Alcaraz at Wimbledon.
Jimmy Connors explains why the Olympic gold medal was important for Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slam titles in his career. However, winning the Olympic gold was his biggest goal this year. Although he has stated that wants to play at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, he is aware of the fact that he cannot foresee what will happen in the future.
Former American player Jimmy Connors explained why Djokovic wanted to win the gold at any cost in Paris.
This gold medal is probably as important to him as his first Wimbledon or his first US Open. He’s won all the Grand Slams, and many others, but winning the gold medal here is just the cherry on top.Jimmy Connors said in an episode of the ‘Advantage Connors’ podcast
Djokovic struggled to find form this season and the knee injury he suffered during the French Open only added to his troubles. He managed to recover in time for Wimbledon, where he lost in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz. After taking revenge against the Spaniard for that defeat at the Paris Olympics, Djokovic’s next big target will be the US Open, the season’s final Grand Slam.
