Novak Djokovic is reportedly set to return to tennis in July, but not for the Wimbledon Championships. He underwent meniscus tear surgery at the Clinique du Sport in Paris after injuring his right knee during his fourth-round Roland Garros match against Francisco Cerundolo.
After this match, he raised doubts about his quarterfinal participation and ended up withdrawing from it a day before the match. Without wasting much time, he had his meniscus removed from his knee and is currently recovering from it.
Now a report from the French newspaper, L’Équipe, stated that Djokovic will miss Wimbledon and plans to play the ATP 500 Hamburg European Open, which starts on July 13. The grass-court Grand Slam event begins on July 1.
One of the major goals of Djokovic this season is to win the Olympics gold, the only big title he has not yet added to his trophy cabinet, though he won the bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Hamburg Open is a clay-court event, and Djokovic can play there to get some much-needed practice ahead of the Paris Olympics, which starts on July 27.
Andy Roddick wants Novak Djokovic to return next year
Novak Djokovic shouldn’t try to return this season, as per Andy Roddick. He thinks the Serb won’t get healthy in just some weeks because he is not in his 20s anymore.
A torn meniscus in your knee is not a massive thing when you are 24, 25, or 26, but the timing of these sucks. It's the shortest time of the year for a turnaround. I'd say the grass is his best surface right now and the worst surface for the guys he's going against.Andy Roddick said on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast
Roddick also wants the 37-year-old to withdraw from Wimbledon if he feels he has no chance of playing. The former US Open champion pointed out how difficult it will be for Djokovic if he returns to the court without getting 100 percent fit because of his style of play as his strength is his defense and for it, he has to rely on his legs.
If he pulls out in two weeks, that's bad. That also puts the U.S. Open in jeopardy, and he could just put a wrap on this season and have one final push next year. Let's get healthy for next year.Andy Roddick added
Djokovic is trophyless this season. Before the Roland Garros, he participated in five tournaments and failed to make it to the final even once.
