The tennis world is still reacting to the surprising news of Novak Djokovic’s new coaching setup. In an unexpected move, the Serbian announced his long-time rival, Andy Murray, as the new coach to guide his preparations for the off-season and the Australian Open.

Djokovic was recently spotted at the Qatar Grand Prix, where he spoke to Sky Sports about the decision. He expressed his determination to reclaim the top spot after being overtaken by players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in 2024.

That’s one of the main reasons why I asked Andy to work with me. I still have big plans, so as long as that’s the case, I’ll keep going. I’m going to try to come back strong because I feel like my body is capable of it. I’m still motivated to win Grand Slams and make more history.

Novak Djokovic said in an interview with Sky Sports News

For only the second time since 2011, Djokovic finished a season without winning a Grand Slam. His performance in 2024 was notably subpar, even compared to 2017, a year when he missed half the season due to injury.

Another key change in Djokovic’s 2024 journey was the end of his coaching partnership with Goran Ivanisevic. Ivanisevic has since taken on the role of coach for Elena Rybakina.

To prepare for the 2025 season, Djokovic made an unexpected move by hiring Andy Murray as his coach for the Australian Open in January. This change reflects his determination to push for more success in what could be his final year as a professional.

Jannik Sinner dominated the ATP Tour in 2024 with an incredible 92.4% win rate, winning 73 of his 79 matches. Carlos Alcaraz followed with an 80.6% win rate, winning 54 out of 67 matches. Djokovic was third on the list, winning 37 of 46 matches, giving him a strong 80.4% win rate despite playing fewer matches.

Other players with impressive win percentages include Alexander Zverev (76.6%), Matteo Berrettini (72.2%), Grigor Dimitrov (71.9%), and Tommy Paul (70.3%). Djokovic has dismissed speculation about his career-ending, stating he is still motivated to compete for more titles in the upcoming season.
