Novak Djokovic was seen taking a well-deserved break from the world of tennis. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was seen on an electric surfboard during a vacation in Croatia.

Djokovic is not participating at the Canadian Open this year. He has not played this prestigious Masters 1000 event since 2018.

Djokovic most recently contested at Wimbledon, where he lost in the semifinals to Jannik Sinner. The Serbian has come close to a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. However, he has fallen in the semifinals in all of the Grand Slams this season.

With the Canadian Open withdrawal, Djokovic is likely to return at the Cincinnati Open, where he is a three-time former champion. The Serb will use that tournament for the build-up to the US Open.

How many points will the withdrawing players lose from the Canadian Open?

The 2025 Canadian Open will be missing tennis’ top stars, as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic have all withdrawn due to injury or fatigue. With the current “Big Three” absent, the tournament is wide open for new contenders to step up.

Their absence creates an opportunity for a surprise winner, much like last year’s champion, Alexei Popyrin. He took advantage of a depleted field in 2024 to win his first Masters title by beating Andrey Rublev in the final.

Popyrin, currently ranked No. 26, is at risk of a major rankings drop. If he fails to defend his 1,000 points from last year, he could fall outside the top 50. However, the Australian will have a chance to recover some of those points with each match he wins in Toronto.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner will lose 200 points from his 2024 quarter-final finish. Still, he will remain at the top with 11,830 points, well ahead of second-ranked Alcaraz, who stays at 8,600.

Alcaraz and Djokovic won’t lose any points since they didn’t play in last year’s edition. Other notable players skipping the tournament include Tommy Paul, Grigor Dimitrov, and Alexander Bublik. Alexander Zverev will be the top seed this year, having also made the quarter-finals in 2024, meaning he too will drop 200 points. Second seed Taylor Fritz drops just 50 points.

Ranking shifts are further complicated by overlapping events. Players are also dropping points from the 2024 Washington DC Open, which was held just before the Canadian Open last year. Ben Shelton will lose 250 points in total, 200 from Washington and 50 from Canada.

Runner-up Rublev faces a significant loss of 750 points. Other seeded players affected include Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Frances Tiafoe, Flavio Cobolli, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Matteo Arnaldi.

Jannik Sinner becoming Novak Djokovic’s kryptonite

Serbian legend Novak Djokovic has spent a record 428 weeks as World No. 1 in his legendary career. At 38, he remains one of the best players on the ATP Tour. While the official rankings list him as World No. 3, many fans and analysts still place him just behind Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in terms of performance level.

Although Djokovic has shown some inconsistency lately, he continues to shine at the biggest events. He has won only one title since claiming Olympic gold last year, but it was a historic milestone—his 100th career title. Despite fewer trophies in recent months, Djokovic still raises his level in Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic holds a solid record against Alcaraz, aside from two losses in Wimbledon finals. He beat the Spaniard in crucial matches such as the 2023 Cincinnati Masters final, the 2024 Olympic gold medal match, and the 2025 Australian Open quarterfinals. His experience and mental toughness often make the difference in tight battles.

However, Jannik Sinner has become a major hurdle. Djokovic lost to him in the semifinals of both the 2025 French Open and Wimbledon, failing to win a set in either match. Sinner now leads their head-to-head 6-4, having won their last five meetings. If Djokovic can stay fit and solve the Sinner puzzle, there could still be more big titles in his future.
