Novak Djokovic‘s wife, Jelena, has heaped praise on Felix Auger-Aliassime for being a wonderful role model, after the Canadian star fell to the Serbian legend in a five-set thriller at the Wimbledon Championship quarter-finals. Jelena Djokovic said that their entire family would be cheering Auger-Aliassime in the future.

Auger-Aliassime fell to Djokovic in the quarter-finals on Tuesday (July 7) at the Center Court. The match, which lasted 5 hours and 15 minutes, was not the result the World No. 4 would have wished for. Despite pulling off one of the most incredible performances of his career, he couldn’t get the better of Djokovic.

Djokovic triumphed 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) to book his spot in the semifinals of the grass-court Grand Slam for the ninth consecutive year, as he continues to chase his 25th major title at the All England Club. On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime’s chase for his first-ever Wimbledon semi-final ended in heartbreak.

The 25-year-old had fallen short at the French Open last month, losing to Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals, despite being the second-highest-ranked player left in the draw. After losing to Djokovic at Wimbledon, he posted on Instagram with a caption that he’s finding it hard to process the defeat:

In the process of trying to digest this loss, I find myself using it as fuel to bring myself back to moments like this again. The greatest improvements I can make will come from competing in matches like this, experiencing emotions like this, and learning from them until I eventually come out on the other side.

In the comment section, Jelena Djokovic praised Auger-Aliassime for his incredible game, while pointing out the harsh reality of the competitive sport:

You were incredible last night, Felix. Our kids adore you, and you are a wonderful role model. One had to come out as a winner in that match, but there is so much to be proud of. We will be cheering for you.

Auger-Aliassime has now reached the quarter-finals in three of the last four Grand Slams. He got to the semi-finals of the US Open, the first time in the last four of a major tournament since 2021. But he failed to claim the title, losing to 2024 champion Jannik Sinner in four sets in New York City.

Novak Djokovic praised after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic is into his second Grand Slam semi-final of the season, which is incredible. The 39-year-old continues to demonstrate that age is not a barrier and that he can achieve his goals if his body allows. Playing 5 hours and 15 minutes against a 25-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime and winning is completely mind-blowing.

Djokovic showed that he couldn’t be a walkover player despite his age on tour and having won several titles. He’s still focused and relentless on the court, seeking to make more history and claim more championships. Britain’s Davis Cup Captain Leon Smith admitted on BBC Sports that what Djokovic does on the court is not normal:

To be able to come out and play this level of tennis at that age… it’s not normal. It’s really not normal. I know he spent a lifetime on his body, but to do this, the amount of work that we don’t see must be astonishing. It is amazing. He deserves all the respect that he gets.

Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner on Friday (July 10) for a place in the final of the Wimbledon Championships. The former World No. 1 defeated the Italian star at the Australian Open to reach the final. However, Sinner holds a 6-5 lead in their head-to-head record, and he’s the defending champion of the grass-court major.
