Rafael Nadal, 2nd seed at the Italian Open 2020 was shocked in the quarterfinals in Rome when he lost in straight sets to the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman. Nadal returned to tennis last week at Rome after almost over 9 months due to the Covid-19 disruption.
Nadal also gave the US Open a skip owing to safety concerns. On his return at the Italian Open, Nadal looked in top form in his first 2 round matches before getting humbled by Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals.
Nadal speaking after the match in the press conference said, “After such a long time without competing, I played good two matches, and now today, I played a bad one against a good opponent, we can find excuses, but I didn’t play enough well. I have to think internally about how I can fix it. Now is not the moment to find excuses.”
In the post-match press conference, Nadal said that a reason for his shocking loss was his 9-month absence from tennis and that he had to make certain adjustments in his game in the lead-up to the French Open 2020. The Spaniard also claimed that the super-heavy conditions did not work in his favour as he has had his own problems dealing with humid conditions in the past.
However, he said that it was not the time to make excuses and gave Diego Schwartzman all the credit for his amazing display of tennis.

Rafael Nadal said that the year had been a special and an unpredictable one when asked about how he would bounce back after his shocking defeat to Diego Schwartzman for the French Open 2020 commencing on 27th September.
The Spaniard spoke in the post-match conference citing that he would go back to the drawing board in order to do well at the French Open. Nadal said, “It is a completely special and unpredictable year. I don’t know. I will probably go back home and then see what’s going on. I did my job here.”
Nadal, who is the favourite to claim his 13th French Open title in Paris this year, has certainly raised a few eyebrows after his defeat in the quarterfinals at the Italian Open. But however, with experience on his side, Nadal said in the post-match conference that he expects to fix certain parts of his game and get ready for the French Open.
“I fought until the end. But losing that many serves, you can’t expect to win a match, no? It’s something that I have to fix. I know how to do it. I’m gonna keep working and keep practicing with the right attitude and try to give myself a chance to be ready,” Nadal said.
