Protests regarding poor officiating in games are a constant across an NFL season. Moreover, nowadays, with advanced technology, each and every microscopic detail comes under the scrutiny of the public eye.
Recently there was a jab from an anonymous NFL defensive coach about awarding the Kansas City Chiefs a field goal which paved their way to the Super Bowl LVII. “That is what the owners want, $40 million skill players flopping on the ground,” the unnamed coach said. “Drawing fouls from chemistry teachers, medical device salesmen and the like.”
Amidst this outburst NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell has answered these issues by saying the officiating this season has been top-notch. He came to the rescue of his referees and said while it will never be perfect; it has been a great effort.
Roger Goodell says officials have done an extraordinary job this season

Speaking at his annual Super Bowl press conference, Roger Goodell said that he has never seen a better league up until now. He commented that with over 42,000 plays across the season, there was a chance of hundreds of fouls but the officials did a fantastic job at managing them.
“I don’t think it’s ever been better in the league,” Goodell said. “There are over 42,000 plays in a season. Multiple infractions could occur on any play. Take that out or extrapolate that. That’s hundreds if not millions of potential fouls. And our officials do an extraordinary job of getting those.”
However, Roger Goodell did also add that the referees are not perfect and mistakes are bound to happen. But with the help of modern technology and instant replays, it’s helping them address these issues.
“They are not perfect, and officiating never will be. We’ve also had obviously replay and other aspects that help us address those issues to make sure they’re not something that we can’t correct on the field.”
The Super Bowl LVII is set to start at 6:30 pm ET on the 12th of February 2023 in Arizona.
