Jorge Fonseca is a Portuguese Judoka who’ll be stepping on the mat in the -100 Kg category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He is the first-ever Judo World champion of Portugal and he achieved this unbelievable feat not only once, he did it twice.
The story of Fonseca’s road to the World championship is really unbelievable; in the year 2015, he got an injury in the ligament of his left knee which later on doctors founded out that was a tumor. Afterward, he won the battle against cancer and become two times World Champion.
Fonseca won a total of 18 medals in the IJF World Tour, he is currently ranked number 2nd in the IJF -100 Kg rankings. Now, he’ll look forward to winning a medal for Portugal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Fonseca was born on 30th October 1992 in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) in Africa. The names of Fonseca’s parents aren’t available. His first international medal came in the year 2013 when he won Gold Medal at the European under 23 Championship at Samokov.
Jorge Fonseca Career Achievements
The Portuguese Judo giant won one Gold Medal and one Bronze Medal in the European under 23 championships in 2013 and 2014. He also won Bronze Medal in the 2015 IJF Grand Slam at Baku.
Fonseca participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics as well but he was eliminated in the second round by Lukas Krpalek. After that, he won numerous medals in the IJF Grand Slam and Grand Prix. He also won Silver Medal in the 2019 Minsk European Games at the mixed team event.
But the main breakthrough of his career came in the year 2019 when he defeated all the odds and become World Champion in the -100 Kg category. He didn’t even stop here in the year 2021 he participated in the Budapest World Championship and became the two times World Champion.
