Riley Gaines’ recent support of the “Women’s Rights Bill” by Gov. Jim Pillen started a firestorm on social media. While several personalities and fans congratulated Gaines as the law took a step forward toward women’s safety, Keith Olbermann, a former ESPN commentator blasted the ex-NCAA swimmer for the same reason.
Olbermann undermined Gaines calling her a “nasty, stupid, unsuccessful transphobe” in the latest Twitter (now known as X) post. He further said that she has “no reputation to ruin” as she “sucked at swimming.”
The commentator went further to state that it’s because of her capabilities that she lost to trans athlete Lia Thomas in the 2022 NCAA Championship. His comments and posts enraged fans and popular personalities as they each took to the social platform to bash Olbermann for his posts.
Professor Emeritus Colin Wight said that he is “a nasty ignorant man.” Washington Examiner contributor Kimberly Ross called the sports commentator “How se*ist and sad. Both you and Lia.”
She further pointed out that Olbermann’s criticisms should be pointed at Lia Thomas who “sucks at swimming against biological males so much” that “he decided to identify as female” to win a trophy. Following Olbermann’s latest attack, one Twitter user commented, “You’ve just shredded your credibility as a journalist.”

Women’s rights active supporter Paula Scanlan also took to her platform, calling out Keith Olbermann over his comments on Riley Gaines. Scanlan noted that the sports commentator is blinded by political bias that has made him dismiss the dangers women can face within their private space.
Scalan and Gaines referred to the 2022 locker room incident where female athletes were forced to change in front of trans athlete Lia Thomas. Some even recalled how they chose to change in the janitor’s closet rather than being in front of Thomas. The athletes described the situation as a “horrific nightmare” that has scarred them for life.
Following the 2022 incident, there have been numerous controversies in trans athlete’s participation. Several steps had been taken as Gaines took the lead in these changes. Gaines replied to Olbermann’s recent post saying, “Ah, makes sense now why you got fired from ESPN.”
The whole fiasco started when Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen supported women’s rights by passing a law that states that it’s “common sense” that “men do not belong in women’s only spaces.” Several fans and personalities supported the decision and congratulated both the Gov. and Gaines for playing an important role in this process.
Although results are yet to be seen, the recent backlash from Olbermann started a series of firestorms on social media. This is not expected to die down anytime soon as fans will remember the sports commentator’s stance on the controversial trans athlete participation and women’s rights protection discussion.
