Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn has articulated her enthusiasm about Salt Lake City’s potential to host the Winter Olympics in 2024. Vonn, 39, conveyed through an Instagram post that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has designated Utah’s capital as the favored candidate for the event. Occupying the Chair of Athlete Experience role, she expressed her immense pride in contributing to the bid.
As the leader of athlete experience, Vonn is proud to be involved in this Olympic bid. Vonn stated on Instagram that in 2002, she had her first game in Salt Lake. She noted, “Participating in this incredible campaign feels like a full circle moment. We’re almost there, guys! Us.” On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) disclosed its predilection for Salt Lake City as the likely venue for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
IOC’s decision came as a decision that substantially ensures Utah will host the event once more, approximately eleven years hence. During a press briefing, Karl Stoss, who presides over the commission responsible for selecting future Winter Games sites, revealed that the IOC’s executive board had resolved to commence targeted discussions with representatives from Salt Lake City and the United States Olympic Committee concerning the 2034 Olympics.
Drawing a personal connection to her inaugural Olympic appearance, which transpired in Salt Lake City in 2002, it signifies a poignant return to origins for Vonn. She is now waiting for the successful culmination of their campaign with great anticipation. Celebrating this significant development, Vonn shared an assortment of images, including throwbacks to her Olympic debut, and a visual chronicle of her skiing career.
Lindsey Vonn’s comments after IOC reveals 2024 Olympic plans
Vonn’s announcement followed the IOC’s disclosures, noting that sites in the French Alps were also under consideration for the 2034 Games. The decision-making process saw the IOC’s Executive Board and the Future Host Commission involving both the French National Olympic Committee (CNOSF) and the U.S. The collection also featured mementos from her participation in the Turin, Vancouver, and Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, alongside recent interactions with IOC members.
Additionally, Switzerland’s application for the Winter Games in the 2030s has been recognized with a unique position. They have been invited to engage in Privileged Dialogue for the Winter Games in 2038. If Salt Lake City secures the hosting rights, it will stand alongside Lake Placid, New York, in the historical annals as the second American city to host the Winter Olympics twice.
Lake Placid is noteworthy for holding the Games in 1932 and 1980, and Los Angeles boasts the distinction of hosting two Olympics, with sights set on a third in 2028. The United States has a storied history with the Olympics, having provided the setting for eight Games, ranging from St. Louis and Atlanta’s Summer Games to the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. The forthcoming Summer Olympics 2024 are set to be staged in Paris, marking another chapter in the rich tapestry of Olympic history.
