The World Athletics Championship in Budapest has seen several records smashed this year. The event is now reaching its conclusion as athletes gear up for the final stretch of the tournament. On Saturday, some events saw their finals played. In one of these events, pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis once again showcased his incredible talent.
He clinched a second successive gold at World Athletics. The Swedish player has taken pole vaulting to new heights. His skills have time and again amazed audiences. The 23-year-old has become a world champion at a young age and continues to impress everyone. He was once again at the height of his power in Budapest and claimed the gold medal with relative ease.
Mondo Duplantis stunned the world last year with his record-breaking performance in Eugene. He would go on to break his own record that year with a 6.21m jump to secure his victory. This year, he failed to break the world record but still did enough to claim another victory against his name on the international stage.
In the hot weather in Budapest, Hungary, Duplantis was able to keep his cool. He made a 6.10m jump to grab another gold medal at the World Athletics. By doing so, he also successfully defended his world title.
Mondo Duplantis starting to emerge as the GOAT of pole vaulting
The status of “G.O.A.T.” has been used for many athletes in recent years. These superstars have redefined their particular field of sports with their impressive prowess. Mondo Duplantis has done the same with the pole vault since his debut at a young age. Fans believe that he is now nearing the status of G.O.A.T. of the pole vault at the mere age of 23.
The American-born Swedish player has completely changed the landscape of pole vaulting. Despite clearing the 6.10m jump, he was not satisfied with his performance and was determined to take more action. He would make three attempts to try and surpass his own record but failed to clear the 6.23m jump. This showed the hunger he possessed for success.
Phillippines’ Ernest John Obiena would take the silver medal home with a jump of 6.00m. The third place saw a tie as Australia’s Kurtis Marschall and the USA’s Christopher Nilsen both posted a respectable score of 5.95 m. The spotlight, though, will be on Duplantis as he continues to fly high.
He has now achieved victories in 12 of the 13 events in which he has participated this year. It will take some monumental effort from someone to knock him off his perch. He is also one of the favorites to clinch another gold at the Paris Olympics next year.
